LuK Motorsports
Habitat for Humanity
LuK Motorsports is a group of engineers from LuK USA LLC.  We formed the team in September 2004 with the idea of building a car for the
Grassroots Motorsports $2005 Challenge as way to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.  We would like to thank our company for their
generosity in sponsoring us for this endeavor.  We would also like to thank our wives and girlfriends for their understanding and patience with
the amount of time involved in building this car.  Jessie and Sarah, thanks for letting us invade your garages and homes!

The Event:
The Grassroots Motorsports $2005 Challenge was held in Gainesville, Florida on April 1st and 2nd, 2005.  It is an automotive
event in which teams build a vehicle for $2005 or less to compete in an autocross, a drag race and a concourse.  The scores
are combined between the events to give a final total.
Please visit Grassroots Motorsports website for more information.
The Car:
Lovingly known as Chevronda (Chevrolet + Honda), this little car had its humble beginning as a 1987 Honda CRX HF.  An ad
was found on the Improved Touring website from a road racer in Indiana who had planned to use it as his next IT car.  Due to
other obligations, he did not have time to fix the rust holes that were present at all of the floor mounting points for the roll cage.
A deal was struck and the car was purchased for $550 including the following:
  • 24 mm Mugen Torsion bars
  • Eibach rear springs
  • Steel braided brake lines
  • 3 sets of wheels and tires
  • 2 headers for D15 engines
  • many more parts (see pictures)
  • 2 Honda D15 engines
  • 3 Honda 5 speed transmissions
  • 6 point Autopower roll cage
  • Complete interior
  • Honda Civic Si seats
  • One piece race seat
Once the car was back in Chris' garage, the first order of business was to
strip the car.  Fun was had by all as almost everything not welded to the
car was removed, most never to return.  Maybe next time we should keep
better track of where all those bolts are supposed to go....

Our engine came from a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am.  It is a 2.3 L 4 cylinder known
in GM as the Quad 4.  The car was found on Autotrader.com as a wrecked car
that was running very poorly.  It was purchased for $400. Okay, so we took a
little license with the name, but hey they were used in Chevys too.
The rebuild of the engine included porting and polishing of the heads, take-out
factory H.O. cams, new piston rings and gaskets.  Valve clearance in the
pistons was done by the precise "die grinder + steady hand" method.  A header
was made from two banged up small block chevy headers that were on their
way to the scrap bin.

The car is going together.  This page has some pictures at different stages. The
team has been working very hard for almost 7 months, and the pictures from the
last few weeks are starting to show the results as everything is starting to come
together.

This page shows the car being sanded and taped so the paint could be
applied.  It also shows a couple shots of the temporary paint booth used
for the job.

The car was painted John Deere Yellow.

The Event was a lot of fun.  Unfortunately we do not have the full update finished yet.  Please check back soon......

In the meantime here are some pictures from the drag racing.
